
The Liuwa Plains Safari
The Liuwa Plains Safari is wild and adventurous and takes place in the far west of Zambia in a remote part of the Liuwa Plains National Park. The area is known for its enormous herds of blue wildebeest moving between the western boundary and the centre of the plains.
The Liuwa Plains Safari Highlights
The Liuwa Plains is an enormous wilderness area, teeming with animal and bird-life, up to 35,000 blue wildebeest can be seen moving between the western boundary and the centre of the plains. The Liuwa Plains Safari offer vast open plains and clear blue skies in a wild and untouched area. The birdlife is incredible year round and the predators include hyena, large packs of wild dog, cheetah and lion. Robin Pope will lead the Liuwa Plains Safaris and guests will be based at the African Parks camp Matamanene Camp and safaris will be for 4 or 5 days catering for a maximum of 6 guests or exclusive use to private groups of 8 guests and the safari will operate on scheduled dates only.



- The flooding in the Park from December to April drives the wildebeest migration, for which the park is famous.
- About 334 bird species have been recorded in or around the Liuwa Plains.
- It was declared a 'game reserve' in the 19th century by the Litunga, the traditional king of Barotseland.
The Liuwa Plains Safari Game Viewing and Activities
The game in Liuwa Plain National Park is spread out across the plains. Guests can expect to see thousands of Blue wildebeest, wild dog, lion and sometimes cheetah. The birdlife is prolific and the park provides fantastic photographic opportunities, magnificent sunsets and contrasting landscapes with the green and gold grasslands offering spectacular scenes. The start of the raining season in November brings the massive herds of blue wildebeest traversing the plains in their thousands, along with zebra congregating around water holes and pans. Other wildlife species that can be seen include oribi, red lechwe, steinbuck, duiker, tsessebe and roan. The Jackal, serval, wildcat, wild dog as well as lion and hyena are the predators of the area. Many birds migrate here during the rains and massive flocks of birds can be seen as they migrate south. Liuwa Plain National Park is one of the most remote parks in Zambia and should not be attempted without a guide; this is Africa at its best, wild and untouched.
