The Cape Winelands is the largest wine producing region in the Western Cape; with a selection of over 200 cellars to choose from, visitors are guaranteed to taste some of the best wines in the world. The Cape Winelands is characterised by beautiful mountain ranges, long winding rivers, lush green vineyards and breathtaking scenery and sunsets. Summer in the Cape Winelands is synonymous with harvest season and the freshest locally grown produce can be tasted and enjoyed at various farm stalls. The Stellenbosch Wine Route is justifiably known as one of the finest that South Africa has to offer. The region's climate and fertile soils combined with careful selection of the correct grape varieties have produced a winemaking industry that has survived and indeed thrived for over 300 years. The Stellenbosch Wine Region is today synonymous with award winning wines.
The Wine Route comprises 44 cellars. The route offers the visitor an ideal opportunity of sampling these wines whilst exploring this famous wine-producing region. The cellars of the Wine Route are situated along the four main roads leading to Stellenbosch. Each cellar entrance is clearly signposted - watch for the official Wine Route logo. Most of the cellars offer cellar tours as well as lunches in their shaded gardens or restaurants together with a bottle of wine of your choice.
The Cape Winelands offer visitors a wide variety of activities, excursions and sights to enjoy; visitors will experience rich historical and cultural heritage while visiting small villages and vibrant townships, outdoor museums and galleries, open-air theatres and outdoor art and craft exhibitions. Interesting activities such as berry, cherry, grape and other fruit picking tours can be enjoyed at various fruit farms.
For the more adventurous visitors, there are a variety of activities including game viewing, canoeing, 4x4 trails, horse-back safaris, hiking, mountain biking, rock pool swimming, abseiling and 'kloofing'.
The Cape Winelands offer a pleasant Mediterranean climate with clearly defined seasons, the winter months are from June to August and it is also the rainy season in this area. The average annual rainfall is around 650 mm; however the majority of rain can be expected during the winter months.
The temperatures during winter range between 6°C and a highest of approximately 20°C. Summer is from November to March and is hot and dry with wind at times with maximum temperatures ranging between 27°C and 32°C and minimum between 12°C and 16°C.
