Centrally situated on the 23 500ha Zululand Rhino Reserve, in the heart of historic Zululand, Mavela welcomes all nature lovers to enjoy the Big Five, including both black and white rhino, and a wide variety of plains game in beautiful, varied terrain and habitat. Rolling hills in the North steepen into spectacular red cliffs falling into the Msunduze River in the South. Open savannah in the North thickens into dense riverine in the South. Mavela particularly welcomes birding enthusiasts to this region renowned for the quality and abundance of its birdlife, supported by the variety of terrain and habitat.

Experienced Game Rangers share their love of nature with guests on daily game drives, both in the morning and afternoon. Drives, which will be tailored to guests’ particular interests, will cover the full extent and variety of the terrain and habitat of Zululand Rhino Reserve, and the birds and animals they support. A morning refreshment stop at a scenic spot in the bush will offer tea/coffee and snacks. The evening stop will offer drinks and snacks as guests watch the sun set over the Zululand hills. Guided walking safaris are available on the reserve as an exciting extra for energetic visitors. Alternatively, guests can lie next to the swimming pool at the lodge, read on the leafy patio or sit on the elevated deck, viewing birds and game at the nearby bird bath and waterhole
