You will be meet at Kilimanjaro airport by your guide and driven to the beautiful Plantation Lodge in the Ngorongoro highlands. Plantation Lodge is owner-run, and a stay there really feels like you are a guest in someone's home. Only a 20-minute drive from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, it's a well-placed spot from which to see the Crater and surrounding Ngorongoro Highlands. The gardens are beautiful with flowering beds and mango and avocado trees planted throughout.. Food plays an important part in life here, with a vegetable, herb and fruit garden helping to supply the table. Meals are a relaxed affair in the main lodge, with the bar and upstairs veranda being a popular place to relax after a long day. Swim in the main pool, or relax with a treatment from their qualified masseuse. Alternatively you can visit a nearby coffee plantation to learn how coffee beans are treated and processed or take a walk into one of the farms adjacent, to see how people there live and work. You will spend 2 nights here.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Authority area is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, it adjoins the Serengeti National Park, merging into the Southern Plains. It is most famous for the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most well-known wildlife areas in the world.
The Crater itself is the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera, formed when it exploded and collapsed in on itself some two to three million years ago. The floor of the Crater covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi) and is mostly covered by grasslands with two small wooded areas and a seasonal salt lake in the centre of the crater.
After breakfast you will visit the Ngorongoro Crater tour. From here you will head to Nduara Loliondo, in southern Loliondo, where the camp moves between December and May. Loliondo is a sensational place. Part of the greater Serengeti eco-system, it's scenically magnificent with its wide rolling valleys and whale-backed mountain ranges; at times it can overwhelm with its combination of magnificent wildlife followed by rarefied emptiness. But more than anything, it's a place to take in slowly, to let the mixture of Maasai culture, rugged wilderness and wildlife slowly soak in. You will spend 2 nights here.
Private campsites are positioned in areas chosen for their stunning views. The main mess and dining tent are fashioned after Mongolian "yurts" or "gers" whilst the sleeping tents are the more traditional Meru-style tents, furnished in bright textiles and warm textures of sheepskin and leather. En-suite bathrooms with eco-flush toilets and bucket showers ensure that you can be comfortable, while still feeling just a little bit intrepid. In Piyaya, the scenery changes dramatically and the yurts sit beneath vast skies on the edge of wide and endless plains. Nduara is somewhere you can be highly active: walks lead by local Maasai morani, picnics, game drives and night drives are all planned with your guide to allow you to take things at your own pace. In Loliondo, because we're outside of the boundaries of the National Park, we have all the freedom to walk, game drive on and off road, have picnic lunches out in the bush or stay out for sundowners on rocks with beautiful views
After breakfast at Nduara Loliondo you will head out to the Southern Serengeti, and the Serengeti Safari Camp.
Serengeti Safari Camp was the first of its kind. It was designed with a purpose in mind; to be in the best possible location to view the wildebeest migration as it covers hundreds of miles of the Serengeti National Park each year. So it should come as no surprise that it really hasn't changed much since its early pioneering days. Each year, the camp casts off from Lamai Serengeti and begins its own odyssey. Covering hundreds of miles and moving every couple of months along a route that the herds have travelled for hundreds of years, Serengeti Safari Camp is where you come for your migration fix. You will spend 3 nights here.
Serengeti Safari Camp has just six large walk-in meru tents, with a dressing area and then an en-suite bathroom at the rear. New eco-flush toilets and safari-style bucket showers are part of every tent, as well as jugs of hot and cold water delivered as and when you'd like them. The main dining tent sits in the middle of the line of tents, with the fireplace right in front and a separate library/bar tent nearby.
After breakfast you will be transferred to the Ndutu airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Kogatende. You will be met and transferred to the Lamai Serengeti Camp for 2 nights. Lamai Serengeti sits tucked amongst the rocks of the iconic Kogakuria Kopje in the northern Serengeti. There are panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and it's just a few miles from where the wildebeest across the Mara River.
For roughly a quarter of the year, between late July and October, this is where you'll find the migration, right on your doorstep. Each of the 12 rooms to fit into the complex geometry of the kopje and its views, natural space and light. All the rooms have their own spacious verandas and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and running hot and cold water. Throughout the year, we use our 4WD vehicles to explore the intricacies of the area, both south of the Mara River and (river state permitting) to the north, but we're able to offer walking safaris from here. And of course with a location like this one, of the best ways to take in the Serengeti is literally from the expansive verandah of your room, tucked away in amongst the red rocks of the kopje.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight back to Kilimanjaro
