The Wine Route Highlights

The Cape Winelands is situated in close proximity to Cape Town, with the towns of Stellenbosch and Paarl less than 30 minutes drive from Cape Town International Airport and Worcester only 60 minutes drive away. This the largest wine producing region in the Western Cape; with a selection of over 200 cellars to choose from, visitors are guaranteed to taste some of the best wines in the world.

How to Get there

By Air

Sun Safaris can arrange scheduled flights for guests from most major airports to Cape Town International airport. Many international flights fly directly into Cape Town however guests may have a stopover in Johannesburg (at OR Tambo International Airport). Once guests arrive at Cape Town airport, guests have a choice between a self-drive holiday (rental car) and a private road transfer. Sun Safaris can arrange these services for guests.

By Land

The Cape Winelands is accessible from anywhere in South Africa. All roads are tarred and in good condition. The drive time will depend on where guests are driving from. Self-driving through the Western Cape is an ideal way of exploring this beautiful region. Sun Safaris can arrange a rental car for guests.

The Wine Route Activities

The Cape Winelands offer visitors a wide variety of activities, excursions and sights to enjoy; visitors will experience rich historical and cultural heritage while visiting small villages and vibrant townships, outdoor museums and galleries, open-air theatres and outdoor art and craft exhibitions. The Cape Winelands is known as the culinary capital of South Africa; titillate your taste buds while savouring some of the world’s finest wines in Franschhoek. Taste locally produced cheeses, olives and export quality fruit and organic produce in Bonnievale and Ceres. Try donkey and horse-and-carriage rides through the vineyards, picnics next to a dam, restaurants, gift shops, art galleries, amphitheatres, spa and wellness centres, nature and game reserves, butterfly enclosure, lion park, crocodile park, and natural hot mineral springs in Montagu.

For the more adventurous visitors, there are a variety of activities including game viewing, canoeing, 4x4 trails, horse-back safaris, hiking, mountain biking, rock pool swimming, abseiling and 'kloofing'.

Seasons and Climate

The Cape Winelands offer a pleasant Mediterranean climate with clearly defined seasons, the winter months are from June to August and it is also the rainy season in this area. The average annual rainfall is around 650 mm; however the majority of rain can be expected during the winter months.

The temperatures during winter range between 6°C and a highest of approximately 20°C. Summer is from November to March and is hot and dry with wind at times with maximum temperatures ranging between 27°C and 32°C and minimum between 12°C and 16°C
