Otter's Den River Lodge Highlights

Otter's Den River Lodge is situated on an island in the Blyde River at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment, near Hoedspruit, close to the Kruger National Park. The island consists of 50 hectares of forest, veld and wetland and has 2km of river front. The lodge is known as an island paradise and offers magnificent scenery, exciting activities as well as a peaceful retreat.

Otter's Den River Lodge Description

Otter's Den River Lodge can accommodate a group of up to ten guests in five chalets. The chalets are stone/thatch/canvas structures with timber decks built on stilts, overlooking the river. The central lodge area is where meals are served and the lodge also has a dining room, timber deck, bar, braai/barbecue area, TV lounge and plunge pool. The meals are sumptuous. Much use is made of home grown fruit, vegetables and herbs. Mosquito nets are provided but are seldom needed.

Otter's Den River Lodge Activities

The island consists of 50 hectares of forest and has 2km of river front on the main channel of the river. Anglers can try for a variety of fish species including Large-scale Yellowfish, Catfish, Tilapias and even Largemouth Bass. Experienced guides are available to take guests on hikes through the indigenous forest and woodland. There are 111 tree species and the bird list consists of 220 species, including Fish Eagle, Narina Trogon, African Finfoot and Purple crested Touraco. Small game like otter, serval, genet, civet, bush pigs, bush babies and small antelope can be spotted if guests are patient and observant. Hippo and crocodile are often seen under the bridge. Otter's Den is an ideal base from which to visit the Kruger National Park, the nearby Reptile Park, the Blyde Canyon Nature Reserve, the Cheetah Breeding Project and the Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre.
