Honeymoon on the West Coast of Mauritius

The West Coast of Mauritius is probably the most popular side of the island for families who favour the calm waters and white sand, but is also a desirable location for honeymooners. It’s the coastline that is frequented by elegant pods of dolphins that return on a regular basis to breed and rest.

The dramatic Le Morne offers its visitors an endless curve of sand, lagoons, and pristine ocean waters teeming with fish. The Morne Brabant mountain – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – serves as the backdrop to this untouched beach paradise.

But the most popular beach of all is Flic-en-Flac, a sheltered beach ideal for swimming, snorkelling , diving and kayaking. Flanked by palm-trees, shops, beach cafes and restaurants, Flic-en-Flac is arguably one of the best places to spend an island vacation.

Avid golfers are also drawn to the this part of Mauritius because one of the world’s best golf courses sits comfortably on the coast. The course is none other than the 18-hole championship course at Tamarina Golf Estate. Overall, Mauritius has an astonishingly high number of golf courses, but the Tamarina is one of THE ones to play. The area of Tamarin Bay is also one of the few places in Mauritius where it’s possible to catch a few small waves.

A unique sightseeing trip is to the village of Chamarel, the land of the “7 coloured earths”. Chamarel is a puzzle of different colour sand dunes that cannot mix.

Top choice of lodge : Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa. Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa is located on the west coast of Mauritius, in the scenic village of Flic-en-Flac.

Honeymoon on the North Coast of Mauritius

The north of Mauritius is one of the most popular destinations in Mauritius. The only resort town in the North Coast is the bustling Grand Baie; a town full of hotels, boutique shops and beachfront bars hugging the perimeter of the horseshoe-shaped bay. The North Coast is an idyllic and easy-to-love choice for a honeymoon.

Because the North Coast is developed, there’s plenty to do apart from beach and nature based activities. Dancing the night away at trendy nightclubs, shopping up a storm for fine locally made garments, hopping aboard a few catamaran cruises, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips to tiny islets are just a few of the things to enjoy while vacationing on the North Coast.

Of course the ever-famous glass-bottom boat trips are an absolute must – a unique way of seeing the underwater world, which almost always has 100% visibility. And a romantic trip to the shores of Turtle Bay comes highly recommended.

Sign-up for a few tours to the L’Aventure du Sucre (sugar cane museum and factory) or pay a visit to the Port Louis Central Market for a few curios. There are a good few heritage and cultural tours on the North Coast, Mauritius’ most well-known coastline.

Top choice of lodge : The Oberoi enjoys an unrivalled position on the shores of Turtle Bay – a natural marine park with a vibrant coral reef.

Honeymoon on the East Coast

The East Coast of Mauritius is quiet and chilled compared to the other coasts; an ideal coast for the serenity seekers and honeymooners content with relaxing on the beach.

It’s here you’ll find yet another of Mauritius’s famed golf courses and abundant water activities. The East Coast offers an array of exclusive resorts, and is considered more of an upscale coast compared to the West. Sandbars effortlessly shift into turquoise seas, while palm-trees sway in the gentle winds that grace the island. Windsurfing and sailing are the two most popular sports on the island, and the cool breeze that wafts through provides a welcome respite from the heat.

Two of the popular regions on the coast to explore are Ile aux Cerfs, considered by many to be a water sports paradise and the best looking beaches on the island. The other is the Grand River South East is an attractive estuary that leads to a picturesque waterfall.

Top choice of lodge for honeymoon : The Long Beach sits on the edge of one of Mauritius’ longest, widest and most beautiful natural beaches.

South Coast

The South Coast of Mauritius is the wild child of the area and has a rugged coastline surrounded by basalt cliffs. There are sheltered sandy coves, a myriad of waterfalls hidden in forests, and plenty of traditional fishing villages dotting the coast.

The landscape on the South Coast is vastly different – it’s very raw and is known for its mountain topography. Barrelling waves, sandy beaches and adventure activities are the order of the day along this coastline. If you fancy an adventurous honeymoon, then the South Coast is your answer, as it’s the best of both mountain and sea.

Top choice of lodge for honeymoon : Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf and Spa is set at the foot of the majestic Le Morne Mountain on an incredible peninsula in Mauritius.
