History of the Mighty Mapogo Male Lions – by Brett Thomson
Paddy Hagelthorn has spent the last 26 years in South African private game reserves, conducting safaris, managing lodges and training rangers, and he is currently in a senior position at Savanna Lodge in the Sabi Sand. He has been lucky enough to witness the rise and fall of the Mighty Mapogo. “This coalition originated from Mala Mala from what I believe was called the “Eyrefield Pride” and moved into the Western Section in 2004. In their quest to dominate this area, they killed approximately 40 other lions which included lots of cubs, females and adult males. Once they had established themselves, the coalition split and two took over the Londolozi area coming into the Singita area, whilst the other four took over the Singita and Western block area. In 2007 a new coalition moved down from the North into the Londolozi area and in the ensuing battles, one of the five in the new coalition was killed, as well as one of the two Mapogo. The one remaining Mapogo then returned to the Western block to join up with the other four of the coalition. He had not been part of the breeding of the cubs in the...
This is why Trophy Hunting will not Save Our Lions
Kenya has long since abolished trophy hunting in favour of protecting its wildlife and has opted for ecotourism instead. Last December, for the first time, the Maasai Olympics were held as a competitive replacement for traditional lion hunting; yet another Kenyan stride to preserve its precious ecosystem. Zambia and Botswana took a united stand against hunting and have both issued laws against the trophy killings. As of 2014, lions in these countries will be safe from the legal hunt for their heads – a hugely important step in conserving the species and maintaining the sheer magnificence of some of Southern Africa’s most premier wildlife areas. Conversely, Tanzania’s wildlife authorities steadfastly support its ‘sustainable’ hunting practice, claiming their stronghold lion population can be attributed to its hunting industry. South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe also sell their wild lions to trophy seekers in the name of income and conservation, the argument being that the millions of US$ brought into the country through big game hunting is what is sustaining ecosystems and local communities. What needs to be understood is that we are no longer living in an Africa that is overflowing with wildlife, we are no longer on prime hunting ground;...
Desert Lion Conservation is Saving the Lions of the Skeleton Coast.
It is nothing less than eye-opening to spend time delving into the depths of wildlife conservation in Africa. The development of ecotourism has encouraged travellers to be aware of the roots of their safaris and the environments which present such breath-taking sightings and experiences. Increasingly, there is acknowledgement of the sensitivity of the African soil, the animals that roam upon it, and the human occupants that have, for centuries, depended on it for its natural resources. It is evident that as time passes, this land becomes more and more precious. It begins to run out, as human populations grow and their requirements increase and the mutual ownership by man and beast begins to overlap. The celebrated power of the lion and the gracious admiration for this Big Cat is a large portion of what attracts visitors to Africa. One can’t help but feel disappointed when a game drive goes by without a thrilling sighting of these golden, maned cats. To watch the protective mothers doting on her cubs is a privilege; proud males laze, unperturbed by the activity going on around them – he knows he can afford to be fearless. The opposite end of the spectrum is that,...
Diary Entry, Images and Video of My Amazing African Safari Adventure – Destination Review by Natasha Allan
One of our consultants, Natasha, enjoyed a whirlwind luxury safari of Botswana, Vic Falls and the Kruger. These are the prime safari regions in Africa! If you’d like to book a similar itinerary to Natasha’s, then please contact us and we’ll happily tailor-make your dream safari. Part One: Diary Entry: I was privileged enough to enjoy a wonderful educational with “Extraordinary”. There were four consultants from four different travel agencies invited to experience this educational. We explored 4 countries in 6 Days! DAY 1: We arrived at the airport to meet the other agents and caught a flight together from Cape Town to Nelspruit. Here we met and road transferred to Hamiltons Tented Camp for a drink and a quick site inspection. From Hamiltons, we enoyed a mini game drive to Imbali Safari Lodge for another site inspection. We then made our way to Hoyo Hoyo Tsonga Lodge, and en route we spotted a leopard and its kill. The ranger first spotted the leopard’s impala kill in a tree, then we found the male leopard lying down catching his breath next to a termite mound. We had a wonderful dinner under the stars at Hoya Hoyo, where the lodge...
