Samburu Intrepid is situated on the banks of the Usao Nyiro River in the arid heart of Samburu National Reserve in Kenya. The camp looks out over riverbanks where herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra come daily to drink. Located 345 kilometres north of Nairobi, the trip to the camp involves a 50-minute flight to the Samburu airstrip followed by a 20-minute drive through the beautiful reserve.
Samburu Intrepid is a luxurious tented lodge offering 30 safari tents providing space and privacy with spectacular views over the wildlife-rich riverbanks of the Usao Nyiro River. The tents are spacious and offer a cool retreat underneath palm-thatched roofs with netted screens. Each tent is built on a raised deck overlooking the river. Romantic candlelit dinners can be arranged on the privacy of your tent deck; all tents are fitted with fans. Family tents are available for families with children and consist of two tents with a spacious lounge and a wide deck complete with lounging chairs and tables. The tents are tastefully decorated with ethno-African and modern furniture. The bathrooms offer twin washbasins, flush toilets, and sockets for shavers and battery charging. The main areas at Samburu Intrepid are situated underneath a cool palm-thatched roof on raised stilts offering beautiful views. The main dining room opens onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the river. Intrepids also offers a spacious lounge and bar area as well as an intimate conference room and a swimming pool.
Activities at Samburu Intrepid include game drives in the Samburu National Reserve and the adjoining Buffalo Springs game reserve; early morning and late afternoon game drives as well as nature walks accompanied expert guides. Samburu National Reserve has more than 350 species of birds. Cultural visits as well as star-gazing are among the highlights here at Samburu. Camel Rides offer an exciting alternative. Samburu Game Reserve is a lava plain that features steep sided gullies and rounded hills wherein the 32km Usao Nyiro River provides both the central feature of the landscape and the lifeblood of the ecosystem. This is a dry country ecosystem and is therefore prone to large variations in the animal populations as they search for water. Poaching has completely wiped out the rhino herds in this area. The camp's location deep inside the reserve guarantees close encounters with the region's shier wildlife including elephant, lion, leopard and Samburu's unique five - the rare reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk, antelope, Somali ostrich, Grevy's zebra and Beisa Oryx. Marshal eagles, pygmy falcons, hornbills and Egyptian geese can also be spotted.
