Marakapula Reserve Highlights

Marakapula is ideal for guests with a plan to visit the Kruger National Park. The Phalaborwa gate of this world-renowned park is located only 25km from Marakapula and is very easy to access. The beautiful African nature of Makubu Lodge at Marakapula is quiet and energising, removing one from the day's game viewing excitement and offering a riverside retreat.

Guests at Marakapula are set to enjoy a variety of safari activities, from game drives in the private Big 5 reserve, to day trips in the Kruger National Park, boat cruises on the Olifants River nearby, and walking safaris. This is an ideal location for an entirely uncrowded and peaceful experience with all the action of a safari.

The location of Makubu Lodge is indulgently placed along the Selati River. The views from the bedrooms are enough to make one want to stay in bed, but the call of the wild will encourage you to explore this wonderful reserve. Marakapula is a reserve on community-owned land and is maintained very well as a large sanctuary to the Big 5 and many more wildlife species.

Sun Safaris Says

The rooms at Makubu Lodge are scattered along the banks of the Selati River either side of the main lodge structure. A running theme throughout the lodge continues to each private riverside chalet; thatched roofs, vibrant red walls, African decor, and luxurious comfort. Wooden and stone walkways lead guests through a flourishing garden to their individual chalets.

Each of the 7 chalets sleeps 2 people in 1 double or 2 twin beds. The rooms are spaciously open plan with a fireplace comforted by 2 armchairs and a coffee table. Ensuite bathrooms lead directly off the bedroom featuring a vanity station with complimentary bath products, a large stone bath looking out onto the river, a pair of dressing gowns and slippers.

Both the shower and toilet have separate doors, maintaining a level of privacy without compromising on the open plan style of the room. With wide windows opening up onto the river and private wooden decks, there is no missing the spectacular views while you recline in ultimate comfort at Makubu Lodge.

Marakapula Reserve Activities

Marakapula boasts a fantastic array of ways to explore this astoundingly beautiful area and to enjoy sightings of the Big 5 and all its fellow wildlife. Makubu Lodge is in an incredible location on this reserve, right on the banks of the Selati River, under the shade of huge fig trees. African fish eagles, green-backed herons and black-headed orioles are among the many birds that form part of everyday life at Makubu. The river is alive with fish, from silver barbels to bream, and the company of elephants at the water's edge is frequent.

After exhilarating game drives in the Kruger National Park, in Marakapula Big 5 reserve itself, or after a cruise on the Olifants River, guests gather back at the warmth of Makubu's boma fire and listen to the night come alive with cicadas, frogs, toads and the purring African scops owl. The camp's dog, Rigby, is an ever friendly and happy presence, too.
