Safaris from Cape Town
Cape Town is not particularly close to any large game
parks. The closest Reserve is
Sanbona Wildlife Reserve which is approximately 2
hours drive from Cape Town.
The closest large Reserve
is in the Eastern Cape. Addo Elephant Park
and the adjoining Shamwari Game
Reserve are approximately 8 hours drive or 1 1/2 hour flight from Cape Town.
These Reserves are less than 100km from Port Elizabeth (another host city).
Other South African National Parks are accessible through
scheduled flights (some via Johannesburg). Alternatively,
Botswana or Namibia are
fantastic safari destinations from Cape Town, with direct flights to Maun or
Windhoek respectively. Botswana and Namibia have ideal temperatures for a safari
from May and October.
Cape Town self-drive during the FIFA World Cup
South Africa has a very good road infrastructure which
makes self-drive travel very easy. The most popular self-drive route from Cape
Town is to travel along the coast up the Garden Route visiting Knysna and
Plettenberg Bay, amongst others. This route can also incorporate the Addo
Elephant Park for a safari and then loops back inland finishing in Cape Town. We
recommend at least 10 days for this trip.
Alternatively, for those with a bit more time, those
wanting to get away from the busier routes, or those who have already seen the
Garden Route, a trip up the West Coast is extremely interesting. Although a long
drive, this route will eventually take you into Namibia where you could go on
safari.
