Treetops Hotel
Aberdare National Park
Kenya

Introduction

Treetops Hotel is located 6,450 feet above sea level on the Aberdare Range and in sight of Mount Kenya. The hotel has grown from a modest two room house to 50 rooms. The original Treetops Hotel was burned down by African guerrillas during the 1954 Mau Mau Uprising, but the hotel was rebuilt near the same waterhole where guests can observe local wildlife. Treetops Hotel is probably best known as the place where The Princess Elizabeth acceded to the thrown on the death of her father George VI during a visit in 1952.

Camp Description

Treetops Hotel was rebuilt in 1957 on a nearby chestnut tree overlooking the same water hole and saltlick near the elephant migration pathway to Mount Kenya. Treetops Hotel remains an overnight destination with only overnight luggage allowed. Treetops Hotel comprises of 50 cosy rooms and 2 suites, a lounge overlooking the waterhole and 2 bars. The restaurant where dinner is served has charming old world refectory tables with bench seating. There is an optional buzzer in each room that alerts guests if something special were to show up at the water hole or saltlick. A thousand watt artificial moon is used to illuminate the water hole at night. Guests can observe wildlife from one of the four viewing decks. Treetops Hotel has a low decibel restriction due to the hearing sensitivity of many animals, including a ban on all hard-soled footwear.

Game Viewing

Treetops Hotel lies in a path of the elephant migratory route between the Aberdare Mountains and Mount Kenya National Park. It is also strategically positioned in front of a water hotel and saltlick. Cape buffalo, large spotted genet, Defassa waterbuck, white-tailed mongoose and spotted hyena can often be found at the nearby water hole. Treetops Hotel is a birdwatcher’s paradise with African Pied Wagtail, black crane, blue-eared glossy starling, grey heron, Egyptian goose and crowned hornbill to name a few that have been spotted.
