SINGITA CASTLETON LODGE
Kruger Park, South Africa
Kruger Safaris
The Singita Private Game Reserve lies in the heart of the Sabi Sand Reserve, a world-renowned wildlife Mecca on South Africa's glorious eastern escarpment, in the Province of Mpumulanga. Sabi lies adjacent to the Kruger National Park, though no fences exist between the two, allowing the animals free roam across the wild expanses. Singita comprises five luxury safari lodges in two South African game reserves. The camps comprise of: Ebony, Boulders, Castleton, Lebombo, and Sweni Lodges.
Sprawled across open savannah plains and overlooking a huge water hole, Singita Castleton Camp is a delightfully unpretentious and yet luxurious retreat.
Castleton Camp lies between the Sabi and Sand Rivers, against the eastern boundary of the Kruger National Park, in the Sabi Sands Reserve. The Baille's family acquired the Ravenscourt and Castleton farms in 1927, and little has changed over the course of almost a century. Castleton Camp's bodering Kruger National Park ensures that the watering hole attracts enough of the diverse wildlife to satisfy even the most ardent of game viewers. Castleton caters for the discerning traveller wanting personalised service together with a homely bush atmosphere. It has world class comfort, style, food and rare vintage wines.
Singita Castleton has great service standards and puts much importance on attention to detail; staying here is almost like owning your very own lodge. Reservations at Castleton are limited to group bookings and this camp makes an ideal getaway for families and groups wishing to spend quality time together on safari.
Camp Description
Experience world class comfort: six private en-suite air-conditioned thatched bedrooms. Each chalet sleeps two and has en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. The natural, understated luxury of the farmhouse and six cottages is permeated by warmth, comfort and contentment. The broad, polished verandas overlook a vast waterhole, where herds of antelope and wildebeest pause to rest in the course of their endless migration.
Castleton Camp has a large, new filtered swimming pool provides the perfect means of cooling off during the heat of a Lowveld summer. Drinks are served on the patio before either enjoying a delightful gourmet dinner in the reed-enclosed boma under the stars, or sitting down to an elegantly set table in the charming and tranquil dining room.
Your time at Singita is your own. While the camp offers game drives and walks, and the finest big five game viewing in Southern Africa, Singita is distinguished by the wide range of activities its guests are free to enjoy at the lodges and camps. Clay pigeon shooting is available on request, or guests may try some seasonal fishing in the rivers. You may ask your ranger to requisition a private Land Rover, or you may choose to join one of the daily drives or group walks. Bush breakfasts and sunset cocktails may be arranged for you in some of the most scenic spots in the reserve, or you may dine on the privacy of your deck.
Game Viewing
Wildlife in the Sabi Sand Reserve lives up to its international reputation. Abundant in the Big Five and myriad smaller creatures, the reserve is bisected by the Sand River, an important source of water and a consistent place of refuge on the animals' endless migration. The lie of the land is perfectly suited to game viewing. Groves of acacia thornveld, Marula trees and flatcrowns give way to open expanses of grassland, where zebra, antelope and wildebeest graze, ever wary of the threat of the large cats. Drainage lines and dry river beds are leopard territory, these majestic cats are often spotted poised in the fork of a tree with a good vantage of the ground below.
The days at Singita start early, just as the sun begins to lighten the sky in the east. Your personal ranger and tracker, who accompany you on your wildlife expeditions for the duration of your stay, greet you in the main lodge with a warm beverage and light snack before you head out into the wonder of the African bush. Most of the trackers have an uncanny sixth sense about the wild, their intuition borders on the supernatural.

Lions have always visited Singita Castleton. If you stir early enough and manage to emerge outside with a cup of coffee, you might see the lionesses and cubs of the Singita Castleton pride, in the tall grass just beyond the lawn, cleaning themselves and playing with each other, often sluggish and satisfied after the night's hunt.
Game safaris are offered in an open Land Rover, accompanied by a personal game ranger and tracker team. Walking and night safaris round off an exceptional wildlife experience which include the Big Five, Cheetah, Wild dog, Antelope species and a vast array of spectacular birdlife.
