Serengeti Safari Camp & Loliondo, Serengeti
Introduction
The
Serengeti ecosystem's diverse habitats range from vast open grassland plains to
acacia strewn savannahs and rocky outcrops, and sustain more than thirty species
of large herbivores and over five hundred varieties of birds. And it is said
that the annual wildebeest migration is the largest movement of animals on the
planet. Wildebeest, zebra and gazelle herds number in their millions and follow
the seasonal rains in search of water and fresh grazing. .
Both Serengeti and Loliondo Safari Camps are seasonally mobile and positioned to
take full advantage of this incredible natural phenomenon. But even with the
most exceptional and experienced guides, it can be difficult to predict the
actions of over a million indecisive wildebeest. However, this all adds to the
adventure.
Camp
Description
The camps are semi-nomadic - they wont move whilst youre there - but
theyre actually on a wide orbit shadowing the migration; so you, your Tanzanian
driver-guide and private 4WD vehicle are as close to a million wildebeest as
possible. While you can head off from dawn till dusk on your own adventures,
the small wandering camps are sociable because theyre shared - with guests
staying in classic bush style.
Serengeti Safari Camp travels through the Serengeti National Park
where the densities of animals and predators are high. The camp will have been
positioned before arrival in likely proximity to the predicted path of the
migration. Each couple, or group of guests has total flexibility to plan daily
activities according to their own interests. Camp movements are pre-planned in
an effort to be within reach of the wildebeest migration, but this cannot always
be guaranteed given the unpredictability of nature according to weather
conditions.
The Loliondo Safari Camp moves within the Loliondoarea on the eastern
periphery of the Serengeti National Park, giving you a rare freedom to get much
closer to nature and the Maasai. Although the Serengeti park boundaries
officially define the Serengeti itself, the eco-system goes way beyond and
encompasses all of the Loliondo area. This camp is also seasonal and light
enough to move locations throughout the area.
Accommodation
The Serengeti Safari Camp tents are comfortable, light
and simple, but equipped with everything you might need. The bathrooms are
en-suite, with traditional safari style bucket showers, short drop toilets, and
hot and cold water on demand. All you have to do is arrive in camp at the end of
every exciting day, to hot showers, ice filled gin & tonics, and a roaring
campfire. The days end with dinner, stars, and fireside safari bonhomie.
The Loliondo Safari Camp has been created to compliment
the Serengeti Safari Camp. Similar in design and concept, it operates within the
Maasai concession area on the peripheries of the Serengeti National Park. Whilst
the landscape and game is stunning, the emphasis is very much on cultural
interaction with the Maasai. Also here you have the opportunity to do walking
safaris, and night-drives. On foot this amazing landscape offers a completely
different viewpoint. The Loliondo Safari Camps moves seasonally as weather and
game conditions dictate. A safari linking Loliondo Safari Camp and Serengeti
Safari Camp offers the ultimate Serengeti experience.
Game
Viewing
The Migration
This is truly one of the wonders of the animal world. A
million and more animals playing out their lives in the Serengeti ecosystem,
watched all the way by lions, hyenas and crocodiles. The river crossings
happen at any time during this time of year, but are elusive, rapid and
unforgettable experiences. The Serengeti and Loliondo Safari Camps shadow the
wildebeest migration so that wherever the great herds are you're as close to
them as you're likely to get.

Activities
Private game drives in 4WD vehicles, daily game viewing, great birding.
Opportunities to see the great wildebeest and zebra migration, large herds of
plains game and the highest concentrate of predators in Africa.
If staying in Loliondo, whilst the landscape and game viewing is spectacular,
the emphasis in these areas is as much on cultural interaction with the Maasai,
and walking safaris and night drives, which are not possible within the
Serengeti National Park itself. Its where you can get out of your car, and walk
in total safety with its ancient custodians.
