Matobo National Park
The Matobo National Park Highlights
The Matobo National Park is situated approximately 35km south of Bulawayo. This small, intimate park is easily accessible and offers remarkable natural beauty and contains some of the region's most extraordinary scenery. The park is characterized by huge piles of granite boulders and rocks balancing on rocks at unbelievable angles. The Matobo National Park also offers magnificent Bushman rock art and is a holy area for the Ndebele people. The Hills were formed over 2000 million years ago. Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele nation, gave the area its name, meaning 'Bald Heads'. The Hills cover an area of approximately 3100 km², of which 424 km² is the National Park. The park offers magnificent scenery and sunsets as well as an abundance of wildlife including black rhino and white rhino. The highest point in the hills is named Gulati, 1549m just outside the north-eastern corner of the park.
The Matobo National Park Game Viewing
The camps in the area offer a variety of activities and may vary from camp to camp. Game viewing opportunities are offers by vehicle or on foot. Guests can track the endangered black rhino. White rhino are easier to see in these parts and all activities will be accompanied by experienced guides. Another highlight is exploring the hills where nomads once held their holy ceremonies. The rocky granite topography boasts more than 2000 sites of the San (Bushman) tribes and is most likely the richest source of San rock art known.
