South Luangwa National Park is characterized by lush riverine vegetation and hippos are found in abundance here. South Luangwa National Park offers the ideal habitat for birdlife and guests can enjoy incredible bird-watching in the park including species like the African Fish Eagle and bee-eaters. The emphasis at Kalamu Lagoon Camp is on guided bush walks, however a popular activity is a bush walk combined with a game drive.

Kalamu Lagoon Camp is situated in a unique and remote section of the South Luangwa National Park. Accommodation at Kalamu Lagoon Camp consists of eight safari-style reed and canvas tents; each tent offers en-suite facilities with both indoor and outdoor showers. The main area at Kalamu Lagoon Camp consists of a dining and bar area situated underneath a canopy of giant ebony trees; the camp also has a swimming pool and viewing deck area situated to the side of the camp all offering magnificent views of the lagoon.

The South Luangwa National Park is a famous walking destination in Africa; guests visiting Kalamu Lagoon Camp have the choice to explore the Luangwa riverine vegetation and adjacent dambos on guided walks. Other activities include day-and-night wildlife-viewing drives. The highest concentration of wildlife is found along the Luangwa River and its lush vegetation creates the ideal habitat for wildlife and birdlife. There are herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as dominant antelope species such as impala and puku. Other antelope include common waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, kudu, grysbok, oribi, reedbuck, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable and roan. Species such as Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest occur nowhere else on the planet and the area's leopard viewing is legendary. The major predators are lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dogs. High-density hippo populations can be found along the riverbanks while yellow baboon and Defassa waterbuck provide a contrast to their southern cousins.
