The South Luangwa National Park consists of approximately 9 050 sq km of prime African bushveld in the Luangwa Valley floor. Certain areas around Kalamu Bush Camp consist of dense vegetation and bushbuck and leopard are abundant. The major predators are lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dogs. High-density hippo populations can be found along the riverbanks while yellow baboon and Defassa waterbuck provide a contrast to their southern cousins. Buffalo and the South Luangwa elephant are drawn to the river both for food and water. The yellow baboon and endemic Thornicroft's giraffe are often encountered but puku and impala are undoubtedly the most abundant residents.
