Kafunta River Lodge is privately owned and run and offers guests an unforgettable safari experience in the magnificent South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Kafunta River Lodge is a traditional safari lodge ideally located to explore the game rich Mfuwe area. Night drives are a highlight and guests will have the opportunity to observe nocturnal species come alive at night. The South Luangwa National Park in Zambia offers an untouched African wilderness with over 50 different animal species, some of them unique to the Luangwa Valley including the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson's wildebeest. The area is famous for leopard and lion viewing as well as the highest density of hippos and crocodiles in the river. The Luangwa Valley is a birders paradise with over 450 bird species recorded in the area.


Kafunta River Lodge Description


Kafunta River Lodge offers 8 double chalets and 2 luxury suites catering for a total of 20 guests. The rooms are spacious and offer private verandas with magnificent views. Facilities include en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, a mini bar, walk-in mosquito nets, electric fans as well as tea and coffee making facilities. General facilities at Kafunta River Lodge include a spacious bar and dining area as well as a bar and swimming pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa Valley offering a regular temperature of 38 degrees. Kafunta River Lodge is open year round.

The South Luangwa National Park offers large concentrations of big game and incredible birding with over 400 bird species in the park including the elegant crowned cranes, Pelicans, the saddle bill stork, great white egrets, black headed herons and much more. A highlight for bird-watchers is the hundreds of brightly coloured carmine bee-eaters nesting in the sandy banks of the river. The Thornicroft's Giraffe is unique to Luangwa Valley as well as the Cookson's wildebeest. South Luangwa National Park has 14 different antelope species; the largest of the antelope is the eland. The most commonly seen antelope is the impala. Other antelope species include the Puku and the Kudu, Reedbuck, roan, sable, hartebeest, grysbok, klipspringer and oribi. Hyenas are fairly common throughout the valley and can be heard most nights. South Luangwa National Park also has a good population of leopard however very elusive. Lions are plentiful and often roam in prides of up to thirty. The Luangwa River also has a high number of hippopotamuses as well as crocodiles. Night drives are exciting and many nocturnal species may be seen, like Genets, civets, servals, hyenas, and bush-babies, hippos, honey badgers and lion.
