South Luangwa National Park Highlights


South Luangwa National Park is approximately 9050km² in size; situated at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. The South Luangwa National Park is wild and isolated and renowned for its abundance of wildlife; ranked by many as one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in Zambia as well as Africa. The park is divided by the magnificent Luangwa River running from North to South providing the lifeline to the area. The Luangwa River is the most integral river system in Africa and is the life blood of the South Luangwa National Park. Zambia and particularly the Luangwa Valley are famous for offering incredible walking safaris as well as night game drives. Norman Carr was the first to realize the photographic potential of the park and the first to start official 'walking' safaris in Zambia

South Luangwa National Park Game Viewing and Activites


The South Luangwa National Park offers enormous concentrations of big game and fantastic birding. The park offers incredible bird-watching with 400 species on offer including the elegant crowned cranes, Pelicans, the saddle bill stork, great white egrets, black headed herons, open billed storks and the goliath heron. A highlight for bird-watchers is the hundreds of brightly coloured carmine bee-eaters nesting in the sandy banks of the river. The Thornicroft's Giraffe is unique to Luangwa Valley as well as the Cookson's wildebeest. South Luangwa National Park has 14 different antelope species; the largest of the antelope is the eland. The most commonly seen antelope is the impala. Other antelope species include the Puku and the Kudu, Reedbuck, roan, sable, hartebeest, grysbok, klipspringer and oribi. Hyenas are fairly common throughout the valley and can be heard most nights. South Luangwa National Park also has a good population of leopard however very elusive. Lions are plentiful and often roam in prides of up to thirty. Other carnivores present but not often seen include caracal, wild dog, serval and side-striped jackal. The Luangwa River also has a high number of hippopotamuses as well as crocodiles. Night drives are exciting and many nocturnal species may be seen, like Genets, civets, servals, hyenas, and bushbabies as well as owls, nightjars, the foraging hippos, honey badgers and lion.

Bilimungwe offers a peaceful and tranquil hide-away in a secluded corner of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Chikoko Walking Trails


Chikoko Walking Trails offers a unique experience in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia; an area famous for offering the best walking safaris in Africa. Chikoko Walking Trails are conducted in a remote and unspoiled area, rich in wildlife and birdlife. Chikoko Walking Trails operate on the west bank of the Luangwa and two camps namely Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp are used. Chikoko Walking Trails are seasonal and trails are operated between June and October. Chikoko Tree Camp is situated 8km upstream of Tafika and offers 3 twin chalets built on raised wooden decks off the ground. Crocodile River Camp also offers 3 chalets built of thatch and natural materials situated underneath the trees offering spectacular views. Walks normally last between 3-4 hours on fairly flat terrain. We recommend that you stay 2-3 nights in each camp to give you enough time to explore the magnificent South Luangwa National Park.

Chindeni


Chindeni provides a unique setting alongside a permanent lagoon in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Guests can expect delicious meals and personalized service in this small and private camp combined with incredible game viewing opportunities. The focus at Zungulila Camp is on walking safaris and no night game drives are offered here. The guides at Zungulila are experienced and passionate and will go the extra mile to ensure a unique safari experience. Zungulila Camp is a seasonal bush camp and is open from June until October. Accommodation consists of only 4 en-suite safari tents with private verandas as well as hot and cold running water.
