Hippo Lodge is situated on the banks of the magnificent Kafue River in Kafue National Park in Zambia. Kafue National Park is one of Africa's pristine game parks consisting of 22,400km² of spectacular untouched African wilderness and offers the best species diversity of all National Parks in Zambia. Hippo Lodge is small and personal and offers guests a rustic and traditional safari experience with incredible game viewing and high quality guiding.
Hippo Lodge Description
The lodge consists of four vintage-style stone chalets, one being self-catering accommodation, and two rustic safari tents each with an open-air stone bathroom. The lodge does not have electricity and is lit by paraffin lamps at night. Solar power is available in the main lodge and the bar area and can be used to recharge batteries. Hot water is provided from wood-fired boilers. The cuisine at Hippo Lodge is superb and served in an open dining room overlooking the river. Delicious bush dinners are also offered on idyllic islands in the Kafue River. Adjacent to the dining room is a fully stocked bar as well as a swimming pool. A small library containing nature reference books and novels is also available to guests. The lodge has a natural hot spring where guests can relax, have sundowners and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.
Hippo Lodge Game Viewing
Kafue National Park is one of Africa's prime game parks and it hosts 158 species of mammal, 481 species of bird and 58 species of fish; it is a nature lovers' paradise. The area offers prolific birding as well as fishing opportunities. The wide range of habitats in Kafue National Park, including riverine forests, miombo woodlands, flood plains and grassy dambos, park-like savannah and almost impenetrable thickets, provide the most beautiful African backdrops to a wide diversity of animal and bird life. Guests can expect to see a variety of wildlife, including hippo, crocodile, warthog, impala, puku, bushbuck, kudu, hartebeest, sable, waterbuck, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, and wild dog, plus many smaller species. The bird life is abundant with almost 300 species recorded in the Hippo area. A constantly growing Hippo Lodge bird list is available. Recorded within the area are unusual species such as the African Finfoot, African Skimmer, Rock Pratincole, Crowned and Wattle Crane, Saddle-bill Stork, Racket-tailed Roller, Sharlow's Turaco, Ross's Turaco, Pel's Fishing Owl, Crowned Eagle (which are nesting in camp) and the ubiquitous African Fish Eagle.
