Rufiji River Camp, Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve Safari Camp

The Rufiji River breaths life into the Tanzania Selous Game Reserve and there is no better place for a lodge than one that overlooks this natural source.

Camp Description

Rufiji River Camp is a tented camp located on the banks of the Rufiji river.   The central part of the camp holds the public areas: restaurant, bar and library, shaded by a traditional makuti roof.  A covered swimming pool is also situated in the camp.

Accommodation

Rufiji River Camp has 20 tents, beautifully positioned to catch the unique African sunset.  Each tent has comfortable beds, walled en-suite facilities, mosquito nets and all modern comforts.  A private verandah stretches out the front of each tent, providing the perfect place for relaxing after those long dusty safari days.

Game Viewing

Selous Game Reserve has over 800,000 mammals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, zebras, impalas, gnus, hartebeests, waterbucks, giraffes, kudus, warthogs, grysbok, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, bush babies, baboons, Vervet monkeys and mongooses. And thats without mentioning the reserves specialty an abundance of hippopotamuses and crocodiles.  There are also over 440 bird species  documented residents of the reserve

Activities

Safaris in the Selous game reserve must be accompanied by an armed game Scout.

Game Drive - These are in our special adapted 4WD vehicles which offer raised seating for better game viewing. Game drives are best taken  early in the morning or at dusk.  The destinations are varied and the itinerary and timing are decided at the moment by each group on the basis of the animals seen and the specific interests of the guests.

Walking - Selous is one of the few parks in Tanzania where you can walk your safari. Many  different tracks can be followed with either a circular walk returning to the camp or a pre-arranged location can be made for you to be collected by a safari vehicle.

Boat- With a variety of destinations, from the main course of the river to the many lateral canals and lakes, the boat trip will let you see another aspect of a Tanzanian safari.  The boat trip normally lasts for a half-day, and it is highly recommended to take one at sunset.

Fly Camping

Rufiji River Camp offers the possibility to spend some time in very close proximity to the bush in a very personal environment. Whereas the main camp is not large, with a maximum capacity of 40 clients, the fly camp, that is 45 minutes away, can give that degree of exclusivity accommodating two to six clients with advised stay duration of at least two nights.

The large tents are double occupancy and are equipped with folding cot beds, mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows. In front of the tents there are folding safari-style chairs and a table placed on a locally made African mat.  There is a clean toilet tent with two long-drop-style toilets and a separate shower with an oil drum bush shower. Soap and towels are supplied.

Meals in the fly camp are served in the lakeside gazebo and the client can expect the same quality of cuisine as in the main camp, prepared by your own cook and served by your own waiter.

Climate & Clothing

The Selous Game reserve is situated between 8 and 10 south of the Equator, so it enjoys very warm sunny days and warm evenings. For most of the year the lightest and most comfortable clothing is recommended, preferably of natural fibre. The heat is dry and the sun can be fierce, so long sleeves are recommended for safaris. A sun hat or bush hat is an essential item on safari.

Sometimes in the evenings the drop in temperature may require a light sweater to be worn.In the rainy season, Nov/Dec and April/May there is heavy rainfall during part  of the day.
