Old Mondoro Bush Camp Lower Zambezi River Zambia
Introduction
Mondoro is the Shona word for lion and the Old Mondoro Camp derives its name from the local legend of an old, white lion that used to make this area his home. It was at this time when David Livingstone made his way through the Lower Zambezi River on his ill-fated mission to prove that the Zambezi River was in fact navigable.
Camp Description
Old Mondoro was a joint venture between Chiawa Camps and Sausage Tree Camps owners which they have built in an Acacia Grove on the banks of the Zambezi River, 10 km from Jeki Airstrip, near the Chakwenga River confluence. The camp has a beautiful site as it overlooks a maze of islands and channels that are inhabited by hippo.
Old Mondoro is somewhat a reminder of the nomadic camps of East Africa, in accommodating only eight guests and have been rebuilt from scratch each season and then rebuilt. The tents, are rested on temporary slabs and have en-suite facilities with flush toilets, and canvas bucket showers and washbasins. Natural lighting is provided for by paraffin lanterns. During the days the tents are left open to take in the views but at night the canvas drop sheets are let down for more privacy and security. The tents have 2 twin beds and there is 1 double bed, with a thick mattress and very large mosquito net.
Well constructed tents of canvas and natural local materials allow the camp to feel more open and more adventurous but still keeping it feel welcoming after a long day out as a retreat after a day filled with excitement in the bush, where non-motorized safari activities are a big part.
Furniture is very rustic, with simple shelving, a coffee table and chairs. A traditional kitchen supplies outstanding meals and fresh bread is baked daily. The idea here at the lodge has been kept very simple; guests have been provided with an authentic isolated safari, rather than sticking with the usual ultra luxurious lodges that seemingly spring up everywhere. It is here that the sound of hyenas replaces the noise of the generators and the spot glow of candle light replaces the harsh electric light. And it is where some of the best guides in Africa will assist guests experience the natural world at a closer look at the natural world.
Game Viewing
The game viewing opportunities and walks take place in this vast flood plains and open woodlands. And this area is very different from the rest of the Park as it is on higher ground, thicker bush and large inland lagoons.
The Parks game viewing opportunities are excellent throughout area, as there is more elephant, lion and buffalo activity west of Jeki, and Old Mondoros area to the east which seems to showcase more frequent leopard and serval sightings, and more plains game such as Zebra and Kudu.
