LOISABA LODGE
Laikipia Plateau Kenya
Introduction
Loisaba Lodge is situated in a private wildlife conservancy on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, 70km north of Mount Kenya. This private game ranch is only a few miles away from the equator where the local Laikipia Maasai and Samburu communities live.
Camp Description
The lodge has 7 en suite rooms, 4 doubles and 3 twins, with French windows that open onto a deck which offers views of a waterhole 1 000ft below. All furniture at Loisaba Lodge is handmade. Tennis courts, swimming pool, spa, bocce court and croquet lawn are available for guests.
Loisaba has 2 sets of Star Beds, Kiboko and Koija which is unique to the lodge. They are set on raised platforms to provide blissful sleep under the vast African sky with only the stars and sky for a ceiling. Kiboko and Koija are designed on a raised, handcrafted, wooden platform that is partially covered with a thatch roof. Homemade Mukokoteni beds can be wheeled onto the open deck for night under the stars or left sheltered inside. Kiboko Star Beds which overlook a waterhole is a 20 minute drive away from the lodge. Koija Star Beds are a 30 minute drive from the lodge and overlook the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Game Viewing
The Loisaba Wilderness is the same size as the Ngorongoro Crater and larger than many of Kenya's principle National Parks. Grassy plains are found north of the plateau while valleys, cliffs and escarpments that frame stunning views of snow capped Mount Kenya are found to the south. The wilderness is haven for more than 250 species of birds and 50 species of wildlife. Apart from the elephant, buffalo, Grevy's zebra and greater kudu, the area also gaining a reputation for big cat viewing. Even wild dog, thought to be extinct for many years are now appearing to be re-colonising the area.
