LEWA SAFARI CAMP
Laikipia Plateau
Kenya

Introduction

Lewa Safari Camp is situated in the foothills of Mount Kenya in the privately owned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.  The conservancy has gained a reputation for being a pioneer in wildlife preservation.  A member of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, the conservancy is a non-profit organisation whose objectives are to preserve wildlife within its borders.  All profits generated by tourism go directly towards Lewa's community and conservation projects.

Camp Description

The camp has 12 tents, each within a thatched structure which can accommodate up to 26 guests.  The tents are more comfortable than luxurious, each with an en suite shower room, flush toilet and private veranda.   The tan colour tents are thatched with reed from the Lewa swamp to provide and protect for the tents.

There is a lounge with library, bar and restaurant in the public area.  The camp also boats a swimming pool, hide and gift shop.  The camp also overlooks a floodlit waterhole that is frequented by a steady supply of wildlife.

Game Viewing

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is best known as a pioneer private rhino sanctuary which also holds 25% of the world's remaining population of Grevy's zebra.  The conservancy is also an important elephant refuge.

Working with the local community, the organisation is trying to re-establish the old northern elephant migratory route as a sustainable and safe ecosystem for wildlife.  Lewa has been involved in a programme of restocking other wildlife areas.
