KICHWA TEMBO CAMP
Masai Mara
Kenya

Introduction

Bateleur Camp is situated at Kichwa Tembo on the western border of the Masai Mara, below the location where the final scene from Out of Africa was filmed. It is set on a private concession leased from the Maasai landlords. The camp lies at the base of the Olooloo Escarpment which lies directly in the path of the Annual Wildebeest Migration. The camp reflects the ambience of the Kenyan safaris of the 1920s and 1930s.

Camp Description

Meaning 'Head of the Elephant' in KiSwahili, Kichwa Tembo' s Bateleur Camp comprises of 9 luxury tents on wooden decking with wooden verandas which overlook the Masai Mara. Inside each tent you will find en-suite bathroom facilities, twin hand basins writing desk, twin beds, ceiling fans, subtle lighting, hairdryer, leather chairs, safe and personal butler. The dining area and veranda have views of the endless game filled plains of the Mara. Pan-African cuisine is served with flair. The 13 meter long lap pool is a refreshing feature. The camp has a small curio shop.

Game Viewing

The Masai Mara is widely regarded to be Africa' s greatest wildlife reserve. The reserve comprises of 200 sq miles of open plains, woodlands and forest. Contiguous with the Serengeti plains, the Masai Mara is home to a breathtaking array of life. The vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle and topi. Acacia forests abound with birdlife and monkeys while elephants and buffalo wallow in the wide Musiara Swamp. The Mara and Talek rivers brim with crocodiles and hippos. Each year the Masai Mara hosts the world' s greatest natural spectacle, the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh grass on in the Mara attracts more than 1.3 million wildebeest together in a single massive herd. At the Mara River they mass together on the banks before plunging forward through the raging waters, fighting against the currents and waiting crocodiles.
