Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park is Zambia's oldest park and by far the largest. It
was proclaimed in 1950 and is spread over 22 400km2. Kafue is fed by
three rivers, the Lufupa in the north-west and the Lunga and Kafue in the
north-east. The Lufupa River floods in the summer, creating a large floodplain
delta system that attracts thousands of waterbirds. The Busanga Plain is a
untouched and pristine wilderness area and most of the safar lodges are in this
region of the park. The Lunga and Kafue rivers are wide and slow-flowing, banded
by riverine forest.
Habitats in the Park are diverse, and include floodplains, miombo woodland and
dambos. It has good concentrations of plains game and their predators as well as
the largest species diversity in Zambia, including animals that are rare or
non-existent in other southern African countries, such as Lichtenstein's
hartebeest, roan antelope, Defassa waterbuck and oribi. Birdlife is spectacular,
consisting of 491 species.
Seasons: During the rainy season, from November to May, it is not
feasible to visit Kafue Park as roads are impassable and swamped. The best time
to visit Busanga Flood Plain, is from mid July to end October. Being almost
4,000 feet above sea level, the Kafue region can be cooler than many people
expect. This is particularly true of the nights from June (especially while out
in the plains in an open vehicle). During the day, in these months, it is
usually warm and sunny with crystal clear blue skies. September to November,
days become hotter and the nights get warmer.
