How to get there
By Air:
International guests can fly into OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg International Airport) or Cape Town International Airport from where SUNSAFARIS can arrange scheduled flights to Port Elizabeth Airport and George Airport.
By Road:
Guests can self-drive from anywhere in South Africa to the Garden Route. SUNSAFARIS can arrange a rental car for you. The drive time will obviously depend on where you are driving from.
Road transfer:
Once guests arrive at Port Elizabeth or George airports, SUNSAFARIS can arrange a road transfer for you to your choice of lodge or hotel. |
Garden Route Game Viewing and Seasons
Introduction
The Garden Route is diverse and has something for everyone. Guests can visit one of the luxury Game Reserves or explore the area which includes attractions like The Cango Caves; this fortress of corridors and dripstone formations is the result of a geological flaw in the Swartberg Mountains, formed by the merging of hundreds of thousands of years of time, water and natural chemistry. Monkeyland is a sanctuary set up in an untouched natural forest, home to chimpanzees and ape species from all over the world. The Elephant Sanctuary provides a safe haven for elephants and offers a unique platform for guest education and interaction. The Elephant Sanctuary is a family orientated operation catering for both young and old and the emphasis is on education through interaction. The Garden Route offers visitors remarkable natural beauty and is considered one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa. It offers a mixture of history and culture and is easily accessible from anywhere in South Africa.
Game Viewing
The game viewing at the game reserves along the Garden Route is spectacular. The area is home to the big five as well as an abundance of general game. The game reserves are exclusive and offer guests a unique safari experience.
The area is malaria-free which makes it ideal for families with young children. The area offers prime African bushland and includes some of the World's Leading Game Reserves. Guests can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, black and white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, kudu, springbok, bushbuck, grey duiker, black wildebeest, gemsbok and zebra. If guests are lucky they might spot cheetah, brown hyena, the elusive leopard as well as wild dog. Most reserves include early morning and late afternoon game drives as well as guided bush walks. All game activities are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable guides.

Seasons
The Garden Route offers mild winters and sunny summers and is therefore the ideal year round holiday destination. The winters are mild and last from June to August, temperatures range from 7.1 degrees Celsius (44.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 19.5 degrees Celsius (61.3 degrees Fahrenheit). The summers are sunny and warm from December to March and the temperatures range from 18.6 degrees Celsius (65.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 32.4 degrees Celsius (90.3 degrees Fahrenheit). The peak rainfall (500-650 mm) occurs during spring, September to November as well as autumn, March until May.
