Chongwe River Lodge Lower Zambezi National Park Zambia
Introduction
The boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park is drawn by the Chongwe River, which is a 4000sq km sanctuary, that has abundant wildlife and is one of the countries most picturesque areas of wilderness. The policy of non-intrusive enjoyment of wildlife and low impact on the environment has preserved the area. The Lower Zambezi area has become a premier destination for peaceful game viewing and unparalleled angling. The camp overlooks the convergence of 2 rivers and the mountainous escarpment to the north.
Camp Description
The camp is set under a complete canopy of huge Winterthorn Acacias and the camp occupies an unrivalled location, used often by David Livingstone on his travels, as did Courtney Selous, when he hunted in what he called his favorite wilderness. The chalets are very big and they are well appointed Mulati tents built under thatch, with open air bathrooms that are en suite. Positioned under a canopy of albida thorns and surrounded by rolling lawns, they command superb views over the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers. Each tent sleeps two people and twin or double beds can be arranged with prior notice. The bathrooms are an experience in their own right as the showers are under the stars or the morning sunrises and all the fittings are made from local material that has been found near the lodge.
Game Viewing
As you relax in the sitting area overlooking the river, you get to see the consessions of game that make their way to drink at the river and you get to see some of the 250 species of bird.
To get up close and personal to nature you could go on a guided game drive in open 4x4 vehicles in specially designed vehicles, enjoy a tranquil canoe safari or find a peaceful spot and try your hand at tiger fish angling.
Chongwe River Camp is a `bush camp` located in a wilderness area and elephant are more numerous than people in the Albida grove. There are no fences and thus animals have complete right of way.
