Chikoko Tree Camp South Luangwa Zambia
Introduction
Chikoko Tree Camp is situated 8km upstream of Tafika. As the name suggests the 3 twin chalets are elevated above the ground, within the tree canopy. This increases the view of the acacia grove in front of camp where a regular array of wildlife activity unfolds throughout the day. The area is teeming with game and attracts both the adventurer and the seasoned traveler.
Camp Description
David Livingstone made his famous speech here and not much has changed since then. All luggage and supplies are taken by porters to the camp for you as there are no roads.
The camp is constructed from thatch and overlooks plains of game.
As the rooms are so high off the ground you are given a spectacular view during you afternoon siesta. A maximum of 6 people can be accommodated in the 3 double en-suite chalets which operate seasonally between June through to October. The chalets are very rustic and made from reeds. The upstairs rooms have a canvas roof, while the downstairs area has a flush toilet and shower.
This tiny camp is one of Tafikas two satellite walking Bushcamps and it overlooks the magnificent, but the seasonal Chikoko River which is particularly beautiful as it winds a channel, is lined by shady ebony trees.
The meals are rather impressive and a relaxed affair, for the kitchen staff though it is a much more frantic affair who produce delicious meals from the most simplest of bush kitchens. Everyone eats together, usually outside and there is an open and fully stocked bar which is on a help yourself basis.
Children from the age of 12 and up are welcome.
Game Viewing
The activities that are on offer at Chikoko are mainly walking safaris as the camp has no roads where vehicles are allowed. You will be able to walk across the river during the dry season or you will be ferried across in a small boat. Other activities include tribal village visits and micro lighting.
Most guests come from either Tafika Camp or Crocodile Bushcamp as part of a longer walking safari. The walking safaris usually last about 3-4 hours and are fairly leisurely with a mid morning break for tea. The focus is mainly on seeing and experiencing the bush so the routes are not about endurance, only a moderate amount of fitness is necessary.
The guides are all from the Tafika Camp and all are very highly experienced and knowledgeable on the bush and wildlife.
