Botswana Fly-in Safari Basics

Where should I start my safari in Botswana?

Most people start their safari in Maun. Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Another start point is Kasane, especially if you are coming from Victoria Falls.

Where should I end my safari in Botswana?

If you are going to the Victoria Falls after your safari, then end in Kasane. If not, it is best to end in Maun.

How do I get to Maun or Kasane?

Maun and Kasane is serviced daily from Johannesburg by Air Botswana. Air Botswana also flies directly between Maun and Cape Town, but only on certain days of the week. Sun Safaris can book these flights for you. Its best to get your international flights into Cape Town or Johannesburg. Alternatively, there are also flights between Maun and Windhoek, Namibia.

Once I have arrived into Maun/Kasane - then what happens?

Once you have arrived into Maun/Kasane and cleared customs and passport control, you are met by representatives of the camps you are visiting. They then introduce you to your light aircraft pilot who will be flying you to your first camp. Thereafter, the camp manager will advise you the night before you are due to fly to your next camp, of the time you will need to be at the airstrip. The camp transfers you between the airstrip and camp in open 4x4 vehciles.

How do I choose which camps to visit?

There is quite a variety, but basically you should try and spend a minimum of 2-3 nights at 2-3 different camps in Botswana. For example you should try and combine a Delta Camp, a Moremi Camp and then also a Savute/Chobe camp. This will give you an overall impression of the beauties of Botswana's wildlife areas. The camps vary in price, so depending on your budget we will be able to recommend which camps you should visit.

There is such a variety of camps, I don't even know where to start?

Tell us what interests you, in terms of what you would like to see/experience, and then we can recommend camps that we think will be a good fit. Alot of the camps are known for different things. Some have permanent water activites, others only during certain times of the year. Some camps are well known for being in prime time lion country, and others well known for sable antelope or wild dogs. We have experience of the camps and can therefore recommend the most suitable camp for your needs and budget. Also bear in mind that sometimes your choice is going to be limited to availability. The camps are small, only sleeping 6-24 guests, so if you leave it late, you might have to go where you can find availability.

When is the best time to go?

The best game viewing is generally during Botswana's winter from July to October. However during the summer, November to June, you get much better rates and also get to see other aspects, like the beautiful colours after the rains, and also the birth of lots of animals as they tend to drop their young during the summer season.

So how do I start the process?

Please email us and we will be delighted to help you plan a safari of a lifetime!
