Thorntree River Lodge reopens its Zambezi doors

African Bush Camps – famous for its spectactular safari lodges and associated wildlife experiences, particularly focused on Zambia and Zimbabwe, has recently opened the latest addition to their collection on the banks of the Zambezi River, and we are very excited about it. Thorntree River Lodge opened its doors only last month after the original lodge was reworked and rebuilt to reflect the African Bush Camps standard of safari luxury in this prestigious position in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. As imagined, it is phenomenal.

There are 10 luxury suites, each spilling dramatically over the Zambezi waters, and welcoming the majesty of this  African river right in. What’s more? A conservation-focused ethos introduces rhino-tracking as one of the primary activities on offer at Thorntree, all in a bid to create breath-taking experiences with these great animals and to educate and spread awareness on the plight of the rhino population. Enjoy this first look at the new and improved Thorntree River Lodge…

The contemporary use of wood and glass in the construction in each of the 10 units sets the tone for the fresh, crisp, and sanctuary-like feel of the lodge. Simplistic, yet warm and tranquil, the modernised tents are spacious and private, and are protected by the shade of the riverine vegetation, offering cool and peaceful accommodation to guests staying in either the twin or family units. Family units are designed to sleep 4 people (parents and children), while every deluxe unit includes a viewing deck with plunge pool, and an indoor and outdoor bathroom.

Details of the suite interiors and furnishings are inspired by the surrounding area, and have been sustainably designed and produced by local merchants and craftsmen, making Thorntree an entirely African orientated lodge, while a fresh and artistic vision has pieced everything together beautifully. Each deck overlooks the vast Zambezi River from an unusual sunken outdoor seating area, laden with cushions for colour and comfort; while the main lodge houses a grand dining area, infinity pool, and wooden decking that bobs along with the movement of the river.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls National Park across the river in Zimbabwe. It translates in English as “the smoke that thunders”, which is local name given to the Falls themselves. There are currently 7 white rhino under 24-hour armed protection, and Thorntree’s sublime offer for guests to be led on a guided walk in the footsteps of these wild animals is one not to be missed. Other experiences include, of course, a visit to the Victoria Falls (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is only a 30-minute drive away, game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, boat cruises on the Zambezi River in your own private, motorised boat, fishing, and various other cultural and safari-orientated activities.

This contemporary take on an old-world Zambezi safari experience is one of our most anticipated openings of the year, and we are excited to include Thorntree River Lodge in our tailored guest itineraries… Especially seeing as their opening year special is only USD600 per person per night, irrespective of season.
