The gentle chugging of the exquisite Rovos Rail moves slowly along railways that pass through areas with dramatic views. This train is reminiscent of a bygone era and oozes a quaint charm. This ancient locomotive makes quite a statement as it rolls into town. You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re on the set of Out of Africa or Harry Potter for that matter.
Rovos Rail train comprises 36 suites, lounge area and observation area. There’s a myriad of African journeys from which to choose and even the option of private hire. The central train station is located in Capital Park Pretoria and arriving at the station certainly feels like you’ve stepped back in time.
The colonial-style antique railway station is the hub of Rovos Rail arrivals and departures. While you wait for your African journey to commence, take a browse through the railway museum and the artful recreation of a fully fledged railway station.
Cape Town, Durban, Victoria Falls, Golf Safari, Namibia and Dar es Salaam are just a few of the Rovos Rail set journeys. You can, of course, hire out the carriages in a private capacity. Life on board is easy, luxurious and ingratiates all those who choose to enjoy the splendour of Rovos Rail.
At the back of the train are the observation cars, which are kitted out slightly differently to the rest of the train. There are huge windows that give rise to expansive views, and also open-air balconies. The dining cars have a slight Victorian atmosphere and the dress code is smart-casual. There are plenty of South African wines on offer and guests can enjoy fine dining while swilling wines.
In terms of accommodation, there are three options. The options include Royal suites, Deluxe suites and Pullman suites. The Pullman suites are spacious and offer a sense of privacy. Huge plush sofas and large beds create a delightfully opulent atmosphere.
