Introduction

The Ark Lodge is a unique tree lodge set in the heart of Aberdare National Park. The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick which attracts elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and the occasional elusive bongo or giant forest hog.

Camp Description

The lodge is named after and resembling Noah's Ark and the main lodge comprises of three decks from which numerous balconies and lounges providing superb game viewing. Comfortable settees on the lounge deck enable you to view the game drinking from the waterhole in comfort. Below the glass-enclosed lounge deck is the open balcony just above the salt lick and waterhole. As it is open, you will uninterrupted views while being within close range of the wildlife. Ahead of the main lounge is glassed-off lounge enclave which affords spectacular views of the waterhole. The ground level bunker provides excellent photo opportunities and allows you to get much closer to the animals. The Ark Lodge boasts 60 cabin styled rooms of which there are 6 singles, 37 twins, 8 doubles and 7 triple beds cabins. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with hot showers and enjoy a view of the forest waterhole. An all night lounge serving tea and coffee is situated in a large viewing deck. The comfortable en suite cabins are fitted with buzzers to announce the arrival of one of the ‘Big Five' at the waterhole. Meals are served in the main dining room.

Game Viewing

Aberdare National Park forms part of Aberdare Mountain Range which contains a wide range of landscapes – from mountain peaks to deep v-shaped valleys intersected by streams, rivers and waterfalls. Lion, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey and Sykes money are easily observed in the park. Rarer sightings include the golden cat and the bongo, an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest. Higher up in the moorlands, animals like the eland and serval cats can be found. The Aberdare National Park is also home to a large population of black rhino. Bird viewing is very rewarding, with over 250 species of bird in the park including Jackson's Francolin, sparry hawk, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers.

How To Get There

SUNSAFARIS can arrange scheduled flights to The Ark Lodge. The lodge is reached via the Aberdare Country Club which is a 40 minute drive away. It is approximately 7 miles from Mweiga airstrip, 1 hour drive from Nyeri airstrip or a 2 hour drive from Nanyuki airstrip
