Aberdares National Park

The lodges are one of the main attractions of the Aberdares. Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Visitors must book in advance and cannot make their own way to the lodges in private vehicles. Instead check-in is at the Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel for Treetops, from where guests are bussed to their respective lodges. The National Park lies mainly above the tree line running along the 10,000ft contour with some forest and scrub at lower altitude in the 'salient' area near Nyeri with the boundary running down to the 7000ft contour.

Ark Lodge

The Ark Lodge is a unique tree lodge set in the heart of Aberdare National Park. The lodge overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick which attracts elephant, rhino, leopard, bushbuck and the occasional elusive bongo or giant forest hog. Aberdare National Park forms part of Aberdare Mountain Range which contains a wide range of landscapes - from mountain peaks to deep v-shaped valleys intersected by streams, rivers and waterfalls.

Treetops Hotel

Treetops Hotel is located 6,450 feet above sea level on the Aberdare Range and in sight of Mount Kenya. The hotel has grown from a modest two room house to 50 rooms. The original Treetops Hotel was burned down by African guerrillas during the 1954 Mau Mau Uprising, but the hotel was rebuilt near the same waterhole where guests can observe local wildlife. Treetops Hotel is probably best known as the place where The Princess Elizabeth acceded to the thrown on the death of her father George VI during a visit in 1952.
